A V/Q scan uses two imaging tests to compare airflow and blood flow in the lungs.
The ventilation part shows how air moves through the lungs. The perfusion part shows how blood flows through the lungs. One or both parts may be performed. This is an imaging test, not a breathing test in which you blow into a machine.
The scan is most often used to look for a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot blocking an artery in the lung. A small amount of radioactive tracer makes airflow and blood flow visible on the images.
A mismatch is an area that receives air but has reduced blood flow. It can support concern for a pulmonary embolism, but the images are considered with symptoms, other tests, and other possible lung or heart conditions. Tell the care team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding so tracer use can be planned safely.
