A vitamin D test measures vitamin D in blood, usually the 25-hydroxyvitamin D form used to assess the body’s vitamin D supply.
Routine testing usually measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D. A report may show a total value or separate vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 amounts. The total combines these forms and is the main value used to assess vitamin D supply.
Active vitamin D is a different measurement used for specific questions involving the kidneys or calcium balance. It is not interchangeable with the routine 25-hydroxyvitamin D test.
Testing may be used when low vitamin D is suspected or when a condition could affect vitamin D absorption, processing, or bone health. The reason for testing helps determine which form should be measured.
A result is read in the context of health, medicines, absorption, kidney and liver function, and vitamin D supplements. Tell the care team about medicines and supplements because they can affect how the result is interpreted.
