Vision screening

Explanation

Vision screening is a quick check for possible problems with seeing near or far and for signs that a full eye examination may be needed.

What happens during vision screening?

Children and adults may read letters, pictures, or symbols on a chart to check distance or near vision. Tests for babies use age-appropriate checks such as following an object, responding to light, and seeing whether the eyes work together.

What problems can screening find?

Screening can identify possible blurred vision, differences between the eyes, or problems with eye alignment. Some programmes also include a colour-vision check, but colour vision is only one part of the broader screening process.

Is screening a complete eye examination?

No. Screening is designed to find people who may need a fuller assessment. It can miss eye diseases, including conditions that have no early symptoms. A concerning result usually leads to referral to an eye-care specialist for a comprehensive examination.
