Vernix

What does "Vernix" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Vernix is a white, creamy substance that covers the skin of a baby while it is still in the mother's womb. It starts to form around the 20th week of pregnancy and serves to protect the baby's skin from the amniotic fluid. Without vernix, the baby's skin would wrinkle like our skin does after a long bath. After birth, this substance is usually washed off, but it can also be absorbed into the baby's skin for extra moisture and protection.
