A urine calcium test measures how much calcium leaves the body in urine. It can help investigate kidney stones or an abnormal blood calcium result. It does not measure how much calcium is stored in the bones.
A 24-hour collection measures calcium passed over that period. Follow the laboratory’s start and finish instructions and collect all the urine required. Tell the team if you miss a sample, because an incomplete collection can make the result misleading.
An unusual result can reflect several factors, including how the kidneys handle calcium and the hormones that control it. Food, salt intake, supplements and some medicines can also affect the amount in urine. The result needs the relevant blood tests and the reason it was ordered.
Follow the testing team’s instructions rather than changing your diet or stopping supplements and medicines yourself. A urine result alone is not a reason to remove all calcium from your diet.
