TIA

What does "TIA" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

TIA stands for Transient Ischemic Attack, often referred to as a mini-stroke. It's a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain, which can cause stroke-like symptoms such as sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body. However, unlike a stroke, a TIA doesn't cause permanent damage to the brain. The symptoms usually last for a few minutes to a few hours and then completely disappear.
