Thyroid nodules

What does "Thyroid nodules" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Thyroid nodules are lumps that commonly arise within an otherwise normal thyroid gland. They are often spotted as a lump in the neck, but can also be found during a routine check-up or on an imaging study done for unrelated reasons. Most thyroid nodules are not serious and do not cause symptoms. Some nodules, however, may become large enough to press on the windpipe, making it uncomfortable or difficult to swallow.
