Thyroid Cancer

Explanation

Thyroid cancer is cancer that begins in the thyroid, a small hormone-making gland at the front of the neck.

What does the term mean?

The thyroid is a small hormone-making gland at the front of the neck. Thyroid cancer begins in thyroid tissue. The term does not by itself identify the exact cancer type, stage, which describes how far the cancer has spread, or outlook.

Do thyroid tests confirm cancer?

Thyroid blood tests and imaging can contribute useful information, but they do not always establish whether a finding is cancer. A biopsy, which examines a tissue sample, may be needed. A thyroid nodule, scan result, or blood-test change is therefore not automatically a cancer diagnosis.
