Testosterone levels test

Explanation

A testosterone test measures a hormone involved in sexual function, muscles and bones. Everyone makes testosterone, usually at different levels. The report may show total testosterone, free testosterone or both.

What is the difference between total and free testosterone?

Most testosterone in blood is attached to proteins. Total testosterone includes both attached and unattached hormone. Free testosterone refers to the unattached part. The two results have different reference ranges.

Why might a low result need repeating?

Testosterone changes during the day. When investigating testosterone deficiency in men, clinicians use symptoms together with consistently low results and usually confirm a low result with another morning blood test. One number alone is not enough to decide on hormone treatment.

Does testing always look for a low level?

No. It can also investigate high levels, for example with excess hair growth or irregular periods, and monitor hormone treatment. The expected result depends on the reason for testing and the person’s circumstances. Tell the clinician about medicines, supplements and any hormone treatment.
