Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is cancer that begins in the stomach.
“Gastric” means related to the stomach, so gastric cancer and stomach cancer refer to the same organ. Symptoms such as persistent indigestion can also occur with non-cancerous conditions and do not prove that cancer is present.
Assessment may include endoscopy, in which a camera is used to look inside the stomach, and a biopsy, in which tissue is examined in a laboratory. Different types of cancer can begin in the stomach. The words “stomach cancer” alone do not identify the exact tumor type, stage, which describes how far the cancer has spread, or outlook.
