Renin test
Explanation
Renin is a protein released by the kidneys that starts a chain of chemical reactions helping to control blood pressure. A renin blood test is often interpreted alongside aldosterone, a hormone that helps the kidneys control salt and water balance.
What does the laboratory measure?
Some tests measure renin activity, meaning how much of a particular substance renin produces over time. Others measure the amount of renin itself, called its concentration. These methods use different units and reference ranges.
What does a high or low result mean?
The relationship with aldosterone matters. Low renin with aldosterone that is too high for the situation can suggest a hormonal cause of high blood pressure. A low renin result alone does not establish this condition.
