A phosphate urine test measures how much phosphate, a mineral in the body, leaves through the urine, often using urine collected over a set period.
Why measure phosphate in urine?
Phosphate is a mineral the body needs for functions including building bones and producing energy. A urine test measures phosphate leaving the body through the kidneys. It is often performed on urine collected over a timed period, such as a full day. The result may be compared with a blood phosphate measurement to assess how the kidneys are handling phosphate.
How is the result interpreted?
Urine and blood phosphate answer different questions, so one cannot simply replace the other. A clinician considers both results with kidney function, hormone regulation, symptoms, diet, and medicines. A high or low urine value alone does not identify one particular condition, and the relevant reference range comes from the laboratory and collection method.
