Passy-Muir valve

What does "Passy-Muir valve" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

A Passy-Muir valve is a small, one-way valve that is attached to a tracheostomy tube. This tube is inserted into a person's windpipe to help them breathe when they can't do it on their own. The valve allows air to enter the lungs, but when the person exhales, it directs the air up and out through the mouth and nose. This can help the person to speak and swallow more normally.
