Osteocalcin blood test

Explanation

Osteocalcin is a protein made by bone-forming cells. Some enters the blood as bone is built and broken down. Measuring it can provide information about bone turnover, the ongoing renewal of bone.

Does a high value mean strong or weak bones?

The value describes activity, not how much bone is present or how strong it is. It can help follow bone turnover in selected conditions or during treatment.

Osteocalcin alone cannot diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones more fragile. Bone-density measurements and a history of fractures after minor injury are more relevant to that diagnosis.

What else can change the result?

The kidneys help remove osteocalcin from the blood. Reduced kidney function can raise the level without increased bone turnover. Age and treatment also matter. The result should be read with the laboratory range and the reason it was measured.
