MPV blood test

Explanation

MPV stands for mean platelet volume. It describes the average size of the platelets in a blood sample. Platelets are small blood components that help stop bleeding. MPV is often reported with a blood count and needs to be read alongside the platelet count and other findings.

How is MPV different from platelet count?

The platelet count tells you how many platelets are present. MPV describes their average size. Neither measurement alone shows exactly how well the platelets work; platelet function can be assessed with separate tests.

What does a high or low MPV mean?

It means that the average size is above or below the reference range used by that laboratory. Laboratories can use different ranges, so compare the value with the range on your own report.

A flagged MPV is not a diagnosis. Its meaning depends on the platelet count, the rest of the blood results and the clinical situation. The value alone cannot tell you that you have a clotting problem or a particular disease.
