Explanation

A Kirschner wire, often shortened to K-wire, is a thin metal rod used in surgery to hold pieces of broken bone in place while they heal. They are often used in complex or delicate fractures where larger, more traditional screws or plates may cause damage. The wire is inserted through the skin and into the bone under X-ray guidance. Once the bone has healed, the wire can be removed.
