IVC filter

What does "IVC filter" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

An IVC filter is a small, cone-shaped device that doctors place in the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. This vein is called the inferior vena cava, hence the name "IVC filter". The purpose of the filter is to catch any blood clots that might break loose from the lower body and travel towards the heart or lungs, which could be life-threatening. The filter allows blood to flow around the clots, which are then gradually broken down and removed by the body's natural processes.
