Irregular contractions

What does "Irregular contractions" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Irregular contractions refer to a type of muscle movement that is not consistent or predictable. In the context of pregnancy, it refers to contractions of the uterus that do not follow a regular pattern, unlike labor contractions which occur at regular intervals and increase in intensity over time. Irregular contractions, also known as Braxton Hicks contractions, are often less intense and can occur at any time during pregnancy. They are usually not a cause for concern, but can sometimes be mistaken for the start of labor.
