Interphalangeal

What does "Interphalangeal" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Interphalangeal refers to something that is located between the phalanges, which are the bones in your fingers and toes. Each of your fingers and toes, except for the thumb and big toe, has three phalanges: the one closest to your hand or foot, the one in the middle, and the one at the end. So, if something is interphalangeal, it's between these bones. For example, the joints that let you bend your fingers and toes are called interphalangeal joints because they are located between the phalanges.
