Explanation

Icterus is another term for jaundice, a condition that causes yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. This happens when there is too much bilirubin, a yellow chemical in hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your red blood cells, in your body. If your cells aren't properly processing the bilirubin, it can build up in your system and lead to this yellow discoloration. It's often a sign of problems with the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas.
