What does "Hypospadias" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.
Hypospadias is a birth defect in boys where the opening of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, is not located at the tip of the penis. Instead, the opening is on the underside of the penis, which can be anywhere from near the tip to the base. This condition can cause problems with urination and, later in life, sexual function. It is usually corrected with surgery when the child is still very young.
