Explanation

"Herniated nucleus pulposus" is a medical term for what is commonly known as a slipped disc. This condition occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of a spinal disc pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior casing. It can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg because of the pressure it puts on the nerves in the spine. It's most common in the lower back but can also occur in the neck.
