Haptoglobin blood test
Explanation
Haptoglobin is a protein made by the liver. It binds hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein released when red blood cells break down. A blood test measures how much haptoglobin is present.
Why can the level fall?
When red blood cells break down faster than usual, more haptoglobin may be used up as it binds the released hemoglobin. A low level can therefore support an investigation of excessive red-cell breakdown, called hemolysis.
A low result has other possible causes, including liver disease. The number alone cannot establish why it is low.
Which other results matter?
The clinician may compare the blood count and other markers of red-cell breakdown. Inflammation can raise haptoglobin, which also affects interpretation.
Ask whether the overall pattern supports red-cell breakdown or whether another explanation is more likely. A haptoglobin result is one part of that assessment.
