Hammertoe deformity

What does "Hammertoe deformity" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Hammertoe deformity is a condition where a person's toe, usually the second, third, or fourth one, bends or curls downward instead of pointing forward. This can be caused by wearing shoes that are too tight, high-heeled, or narrow, or it can be a result of muscle imbalance. Over time, the toe's shape can become permanent, and it might hurt when the person walks or wears shoes. It's called "hammertoe" because the bent toe looks a bit like a hammer.
