Grossly normal
Explanation
“Grossly normal” usually means that no obvious abnormality was found in the area being described. It is a broad observation, limited to what that examination could show. The phrase alone does not rule out every possible problem.
Does it mean the doctor looked without equipment?
Not necessarily. The phrase is also used in imaging reports. In a pathology report, which describes a tissue sample, a “gross description” means what can be seen without a microscope. That specific meaning should not be applied to every use of “grossly normal”.
How should I read it in my report?
Read it with the body part, examination and any limitations named in the report. The wording does not say whether all possible causes of your symptoms were checked. If the meaning is unclear, ask which finding is being described and whether it answers the question the examination was meant to address.
