Glucose in urine
Explanation
A urine glucose test checks for glucose, a type of sugar, in a urine sample. Normally, the kidneys return most filtered glucose to the blood, so little is passed in urine. The test may be part of urinalysis, a set of tests on a urine sample.
Does glucose in urine always mean diabetes?
No. High blood sugar can cause glucose to pass into urine, but it can also appear when blood sugar is normal. This may happen because of how the kidneys handle glucose or because of medicines that make the kidneys pass more glucose into urine. Some of these medicines are used for diabetes, heart or kidney conditions.
Why might a blood test be needed?
A urine result does not tell you the exact blood sugar level. An abnormal result alone cannot diagnose diabetes, and a normal urine result does not rule it out. Blood tests and the clinical situation provide more useful information for assessing blood sugar.
