Glucagon blood test

Explanation

A glucagon blood test measures glucagon, a hormone that helps raise blood sugar. This chemical messenger is made by the pancreas, an organ behind the stomach. Its release changes in response to blood sugar.

Does a high result mean a tumor?

No. Glucagon measurement can help investigate certain tumors that produce this hormone, but diabetes and other conditions can also raise the level. The result needs to be considered alongside blood sugar, symptoms and the laboratory's reference range. An abnormal value alone does not identify the cause.

Is this the same as a glucagon stimulation test?

No. This blood test measures the glucagon already in the blood. A glucagon stimulation test gives glucagon as a medicine and checks how the body responds. These tests answer different questions.

The testing team may ask you to avoid food before the blood sample is taken. Follow the instructions for the particular test rather than assuming that every glucagon test needs the same preparation.
