General laryngeal mask

What does "General laryngeal mask" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

A general laryngeal mask is a medical device used by doctors during surgery or other procedures. It is placed in the throat to help a patient breathe when they are unable to do so on their own, such as when they are under anesthesia. The mask forms a seal around the larynx (the part of the throat that holds the vocal cords) to allow air to pass in and out of the lungs. It is often used as an alternative to a breathing tube, which goes further down the throat into the windpipe.
