Fontanelles

What does "Fontanelles" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Fontanelles are soft spots on a baby's head which, during birth, enable the soft bony plates of the skull to flex, allowing the child's head to pass through the birth canal. These spots can also help doctors to assess the baby's health and hydration levels. Over time, as the baby grows, these soft spots harden and close up, becoming part of the normal skull structure.
