Excised
Explanation
Excised means that tissue has been cut out and removed during a procedure. The word describes what was done. It does not, on its own, tell you what the tissue was or whether all abnormal tissue was removed.
Does excised mean cancer?
No. Removing tissue and identifying it are separate steps. Tissue removed during a procedure may be examined in a laboratory. The pathology report, which describes the examination of the tissue, gives the diagnosis.
Does the word confirm complete removal?
No. When the edges of removed tissue are examined for cancer cells, the result is called the margin status. It is reported separately from the fact that tissue was excised. Whether more treatment is needed depends on the diagnosis and the full findings.
How is excised different from excision?
Excision is the name of the procedure. Excised means that the tissue has been removed by that procedure.
