Endocarditis

Explanation

Endocarditis is inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and often affects the heart valves.

What part of the heart is affected?

The endocardium is the inner lining of the heart. Endocarditis means inflammation of this lining and often affects the heart valves, which open and close to keep blood moving in the right direction. Germs, most often bacteria, commonly cause the condition. Non-infectious endocarditis also exists.

How is it assessed?

Clinicians use the medical history and examination together with evidence such as blood tests and heart imaging. One symptom or laboratory result is not specific enough to confirm endocarditis. The tests help identify whether infection is present and how the heart is affected.
