Dural tear

What does "Dural tear" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

A dural tear is a medical condition where the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord, known as the dura mater, gets ripped or punctured. This can happen due to injury, surgery, or sometimes without any clear cause. When this covering is torn, it can lead to leakage of the fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord. This can cause headaches, and in severe cases, can lead to other neurological problems.
