Disc disease

What does "Disc disease" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Disc disease refers to problems with one or more of the rubbery cushions (discs) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make the spine. A healthy disc acts as a shock absorber for the spine, but disease or injury can lead to the disc becoming damaged, causing pain and often hindering movement. This condition can occur anywhere along the spine, but it's most common in the lower back or the neck. The severity of the disease can vary greatly from person to person.
