Explanation

Dependent edema is a medical term for swelling that's caused by gravity pulling fluids down into the lower parts of the body. This usually happens in the legs and feet when a person has been standing or sitting for a long time. It can also occur in the hands and arms if they are kept below heart level for extended periods. The swelling is often temporary and goes away when the person raises the affected body part above the level of their heart.
