Contrast extravasation

What does "Contrast extravasation" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Contrast extravasation is a medical term that refers to a situation where a dye used in medical imaging tests accidentally leaks into the surrounding tissues. This usually happens during procedures like CT scans or MRIs, where the dye, also known as contrast, is injected into the patient's veins to help doctors see the body's structures more clearly. The dye is supposed to stay within the blood vessels, but sometimes it can escape, or extravasate, into the surrounding area. This can cause discomfort, swelling, or even more serious complications.
