Clostridium difficile, often called C. diff, is a type of bacteria that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. It is most commonly associated with certain medical treatments that disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the gut, allowing C. diff to grow out of control. This bacteria is a leading cause of hospital-related infections, and it can also spread in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
