Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Explanation

Chronic myeloid leukemia, or CML, is a blood cancer affecting the myeloid group of developing blood cells.

What does CML mean?

CML stands for chronic myeloid leukemia. It is a blood cancer affecting the myeloid group of developing blood cells, which normally gives rise to red blood cells, platelets, and several kinds of white blood cells. The diagnosis is more specific than a general change in a blood count.

What is the role of BCR-ABL1 testing?

BCR-ABL1 is a fusion gene, which means that parts of two genes, BCR and ABL1, have joined. Testing for this fusion gene is central to the assessment of CML. The molecular test result provides important evidence, but the name of the test and the name of the condition are not interchangeable. Results require clinical and laboratory interpretation.
