Capillary refill

What does "Capillary refill" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Capillary refill is a quick test performed by medical professionals to assess the health and function of the circulatory system. It involves pressing on the skin, usually on a person's fingernail, until it turns white, and then observing how long it takes for the color to return once the pressure is released. The time it takes for the color to return gives an indication of how well the blood is flowing through the body. If the color returns quickly, it suggests that the circulatory system is working well, while a slow return may indicate a problem.
