Explanation

Bilirubin is a yellow substance that your body produces when it breaks down old red blood cells. It's normally processed by the liver and then passed out of the body in stool. However, if this process is disrupted for any reason, bilirubin can build up in the body, causing the skin and eyes to turn yellow, a condition known as jaundice.
