Explanation

Barrett esophagus is a condition that affects the lining of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It happens when the normal tissue lining the esophagus changes to tissue that resembles the lining of the intestine. This condition is often associated with long-term acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. It can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer, although this is rare.
