Ballard score

What does "Ballard score" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

The Ballard Score is a method used by doctors to estimate a newborn baby's maturity level, or how far along they are in their development. This is especially useful for babies born prematurely. The score is determined by examining physical features, like the baby's skin texture and ear firmness, and neurological characteristics, like their muscle tone. The higher the score, the more mature the baby is considered to be.
