Balance Tests

Explanation

Balance tests are a group of examinations that assess signals used to keep the body steady and oriented.

What parts of the body are involved?

Balance depends on information from the inner ear, eyes, nerves, and brain. Tests may examine one or more of these systems to investigate dizziness, unsteadiness, or a feeling of movement.

Is there one standard balance test?

No. Balance testing is an umbrella term for several procedures. Videonystagmography, which records eye movements, is one possible test within a wider assessment. Results help narrow possible causes but do not turn a symptom into a diagnosis by themselves.
