Autonomic Testing

Explanation

Autonomic testing is a group of tests that checks how nerves control automatic body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating.

What does autonomic testing assess?

The autonomic nervous system controls functions that usually happen without conscious effort. Tests may record changes in heart rate and blood pressure during breathing or changes in position. Other tests assess sweating, which examines a different part of this system.

Why might more than one test be used?

There is no single autonomic test for every symptom. A clinician chooses tests based on the problem being investigated. Results are considered with your symptoms, medical history, and examination. Further tests may be needed to look for a cause, because one unusual autonomic result does not identify a specific disease by itself.
