Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Screening

Explanation

Autism spectrum disorder screening looks for patterns in communication, social interaction, behaviour, and development that may need a fuller assessment.

What happens during autism screening?

For children, screening may include caregiver questionnaires, observation, and activities that show how the child communicates, interacts, and plays. Adult screening may use interviews and questionnaires about current and earlier-life experiences.

What does a screening result mean?

A result can suggest that a more detailed autism assessment would be useful. It does not diagnose autism spectrum disorder, often shortened to ASD.

Can a normal screen rule out autism?

No. Brief screening can miss some people, including those with less obvious patterns. Concerns about communication, social interaction, behaviour, or development may still need discussion even after a normal screen.

How is a diagnosis assessed?

There is no single test that diagnoses autism. A fuller assessment combines developmental history, observation, interviews, and other information, and considers whether another condition could better explain the findings.
