Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a condition where the arteries, the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body, become hard and narrow. This happens due to the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls, a process known as atherosclerosis. This can restrict blood flow and lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes. It's a common form of heart disease.
