Aplastic Anemia

Explanation

Aplastic anemia is a bone marrow failure disorder in which the body makes too few new blood cells.

Why does aplastic anemia affect more than red blood cells?

Bone marrow is the tissue that produces new blood cells. In aplastic anemia, it does not make enough of them. Red blood cells may be low, but white blood cells and platelets can also be affected. This is why the condition can cause problems beyond anemia.

What can low cell counts lead to?

Too few red blood cells can reduce the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Too few white blood cells can increase the risk of infection, while too few platelets can increase bleeding. A blood count can show these changes, but one result alone does not confirm aplastic anemia. Further assessment is needed to identify the cause of low counts.
