Apgar scores

What does "Apgar scores" mean in a report or doctor's letter? In our medical dictionary, you will find a patient-friendly explanation of the meaning of this medical term.

Explanation

Apgar scores are a quick way to evaluate the physical condition of a newborn baby immediately after birth. This scoring system checks five signs of the baby's health: heart rate, muscle tone, reflexes, skin color, and breathing effort. Each sign is given a score from 0 to 2, and the total score helps doctors understand if the baby needs immediate medical care. The test is usually done twice, once at one minute after birth, and again at five minutes after birth.
