Antibody blood tests, also called antibody serology tests, examine blood serum for specific antibodies made by the immune system.
Serology means laboratory testing of blood serum, the liquid part of blood after clotting. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system in response to a specific target. Antibody serology tests look for selected antibodies and, depending on the test, may reflect infection, another exposure, or vaccination.
An antibody result cannot always show whether an infection is current or occurred in the past. It also does not automatically prove lasting protection. The exact antibody tested, timing, symptoms, and other results determine how the finding is interpreted.
