Anoscopy

Explanation

Anoscopy examines the anus and lower rectum, the final part of the large intestine, using a short instrument called an anoscope.

What area does anoscopy examine?

The rectum is the final part of the large intestine. An anoscope is a short tube used to view the anus and the lowest part of the rectum. The examination may be used to investigate symptoms such as bleeding or discomfort. It is a local examination and does not inspect the whole large intestine.

What can an abnormal finding mean?

Some examinations use magnification, called high-resolution anoscopy, to inspect an area more closely. A clinician may take a biopsy so that tissue can be examined in a laboratory. A visible change does not by itself mean cancer, and a normal local examination cannot rule out conditions elsewhere in the large intestine.
